Clinic Patients
If you live within a 50 mile radius of Santa Rosa, California based clinic you can be seen at that location (if you are outside of this area see the section on Cost for Intensive Patients). Clinic patients are seen one time per week, for one hour. The treatment consists of a medical evaluation with a neurologist, neuro-behavioral treatment with a specialist in epilepsy counseling, biofeedback training using integrated mind body technology and EEG spectral analysis, and the option to explore mental functioning utilizing a battery of psychological tests. The majority of patients complete treatment in 20 hours. If you meet the location criteria and wish to participate in this program refer to the section in this Web site for Treatment Protocol and follow those instructions. If you have any questions, please write to us.
Intensive Patients
The intensive is for all patients who live outside of the 50 mile boundary of our clinic location. Intensive patients need to refer to the Patient Protocol section of this WebSite. Please comply with our need for information listed there if you are interested in becoming a participant in this program. In addition, intensive patients must be accompanied by a support person (a member of their family or a friend who has agreed to work with you in the self discovery portion of this treatment).
How long will the Intensive take?
Intensives are conducted over a five day period starting on a Thursday and ending on Tuesday. You will first be seen by the neurologist on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. then starting on Friday you will begin your work with the epilepsy counselor with a baseline EEG and EMG performed at the clinic. Your psychological and developmental history will be evaluated. Psychological testing and treatment included the following objectives:
1)Learning to identify the preseizure warning (aura)
2)Learning to identify emotional, behavioral, physiological and/or environmental mechanisms which trigger seizure activity.
3)Learning appropriate relaxation techniques which are effective in aborting seizure activity.
4)Integrating the above skills and abilities into a comprehensive awareness of when to initiate a compensatory measure, with the goal to abort seizures potential
On Tuesday you will return to the Santa Rosa clinic for an exit evaluation with the Doctor. For planning purposes you will complete your intensive at 3 p.m. on Tuesday. You will be given a copy of your reports which will include the results of your psychological testing. You will be assigned a time to call into the clinic each week for follow-up, at which time you will have the opportunity to discuss your progress with your counselor. This follow-up will last for at least six months to one year depending on the severity of your case.
