APPROACH TO TREATMENT

While not all forms of epilepsy are totally controllable in the sense of eliminating seizures, approximately 83 percent of the patients participating in this treatment approach do achieve control over their seizure disorder (see the section on scientific papers for information on patients success in gaining control).  The majority did learn to control how epilepsy affects their lives by reducing the negative effects of having epilepsy, while enhancing the positive effects of increased self-esteem and resolving quality-of-life issues.  Despite having a chronic illness, you can gain a sense of being in-control of your epilepsy, of your well-being, and of your life.

Who is this Program For?

This treatment approach has been developed and proven most effective for adults and children who have a diagnosis of Simple partial, Complex partial, Complex partial that generalizes, Grand mal (tonic/clonic), and Petit mal (absence) seizures, are not well-controlled with medications and who may suffer negative psychological affects associated with having an uncontrolled seizure disorder.  The major types that are not responsive to this treatment are Myoclonic, Lennox Gastaut, and infantile spasms.

What information do we need to have from your doctor and from you?

If you wish to participate in this treatment approach you must first meet the criteria for an appropriate type of seizure as listed above.  In addition, you need to have your doctor send the following records to our agency:

1.A neurological evaluation

2.Blood levels for medications

3.EEG reports

4.C-T brain scan report

5.MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) report

6.Psychological Report if an evaluation has been done at anytime in the past

You need to send: A letter to our agency informing us that your records are on the way, a discussion of your seizure frequency (from onset to present), and contact information that would include the following; name, address, and telephone number.  Our address is located in the Contact Information section of this Website.

If you have had this condition for more than 10 years the C-T scan or the MRI may not be tests that were performed ant therefore not available in your history.  It is optional for individuals who have had the disorder longer than 10 years.

The Epilepsy Treatment Program Provides:

Evaluation- A complete medical evaluation of your seizure disorder will be done, including treatment to date, and appropriateness for this approach.

Exploration- An exploration of your physical, mental and psychological systems in relationship to the onset and frequency of your seizures will be initiated.  Most people experiencing this type of brain disorder need to identify what triggers the event of a seizure.  Regardless of the cause of onset: brain damage, hormonal imbalance or unknown factors, the events are episodic (occurring at irregular intervals).  This suggests that certain conditions have to be present in order for a seizure to occur.  The discovery of this information is crucial to controlling your disorder.

Education-  The goal of the educational portion of this program is to assist individuals in discovering the answer to their own seizure disorder.  Brain wave analysis (see the biofeedback section for an example), psychological testing, biochemical and other forms of medical testing are used to answer questions that arise.  The information collected is shared with the participants allowing them to make informed choices about their treatment.
